Chapter Nine

After being a free woman for months now, Caroline realized that she owed her freedom to Jacob. She really missed him and also missed how much fun they used to have together. She have genuine feelings for him and felt that he had the same feelings for her. She didn’t want anything to do with the whole jail scene, having been recently released herself. During her time out, she made no attempts to contact Jacob at all. After searching for about 3 weeks, she finally found out where he was housed. It was nearly a two hour bus ride to get to Jacob and she planned on taking it to surprise him. Carolyn was nervous but anxious when she found out the visiting day was Wednesday for inmates. It was only Thursday, so she’d have to wait a few days to go. So that following Wednesday she got her ticket, boarded the bus and took the two hour ride to go visit Warden Stone.

When the bus arrived at the prison, Carolyn got off with the rest of the visitors and waited in line to be searched and checked in. After the officers searched her and ran her name, the background check revealed who she was and they refused her entry. Even though Carolyn was free for months, she still had a felony on her record. She still had never gotten around to getting her record expunged. She was found not guilty but the process of clearing your record was the same one needed to get a criminal record expunged. The system will not let persons with a felony record visit any prison. Carolyn had to wait outside for hours for visiting hours to be over for the return bus ride home. The next morning, she decided to try to get her record expunged. She didn't know how long it would take so she inquired with a few friends who helped her along the way. After about 2 months and a few political hurdles, her record had finally been expunged.

The following Wednesday, Carolyn took another bus trip back up to the jailhouse to try and meet Jacob again. This time, when she arrived they let her in but when she got there; she found out Jacob was in the hole and wouldn't be accepting any visitors that day. She was visually upset. This was her second attempt to see and surprise Jacob and for some reason, it seemed impossible. Maybe because of the powers that be or something, or so she thought, but it wasn’t happening. It was her second attempt and she didn’t get a chance to see him yet again. One of the officers told her that he would be out the hole by the next week. Carolyn got back on the bus when visiting hours were over and rode back home. Upset with how everything turned out, she started to cry and wondered if this was somehow a sign. She thought that maybe she should leave her past behind her, even if it meant turning her heart off from Jacob.
